Note that I've heard other people perform this song differently with a slightly changed ending vocal. They raise the note each time the backing chord is changed. By doing this, they are RUINING the entire purpose of the piece. It loses its meaning. By holding the same note, the singer (in this case Michael Crawford) gives the chords so much more depth.
It is wonderful and I could listen to that part over and over and over again.
